Tomb Raider Reboot Writer Is Hoping The Franchise Will Embrace More Diversity

Rhianna Pratchett, the writer behind the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, has said she’s eager to see the franchise embrace more diversity and representation going forward.

Speaking with Eurogamer, Pratchett admitted she doesn’t know what developer Crystal Dynamics has in store for the series (we already know that they’re working on a new Tomb Raider game with Amazon Games), but she feels Lara Croft’s future exploits should explore more diversity and “paths not so well travelled.”

A good writer wants to take on subjects and sexuality and diversity in all its forms,” she added, clarifying that this includes ability, age, and background — not just sexual orientation.

I hope Crystal, or whoever works on the franchise, are going to be more diverse with representation in the future. I think the franchise can stand to have a bit of that. And I think it will go in that direction.

Pratchett previously said during an interview last year at the BAFTAs that she wants Lara to have ‘less father issues.’

The rebooted Tomb Raider series ran from 2013 – 2018, and explored the origins of Lara Croft as she transitioned from an unseasoned trinket-seeker to a hardened combatant and skilled tomb raider.

Crystal Dynamics’ new Tomb Raider game has been described as a single-player, narrative-driven adventure, and that the team is ‘excited to show where we’re heading in 2023,’ so hopefully we’ll see something this year.
