Sony’s Hermen Hulst Says PlayStation Is Still Committed To Supporting Experimental Games

Ex-Guerrilla Games boss and current head of Sony Interactive Entertainment PlayStation Studios, has said that the former holder is still committed to releasing experimental titles amidst reports that the company is focussing on blockbuster games.

Speaking with GI.biz, Hulst made it clear that the console maker is interested in maintaining a ‘diverse’ portfolio, which should please gamers who were concerned that Sony was turning its back on niche titles.

I think that the games that we make are as distinct and diverse as they can be. From Sackboy to Astro Bot to Dreams to these kind of games that you’re referring to, like The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghosts of Tsushima.

And you can bet that we will carry on making these games, because they are the heart and soul of what we do here at PlayStation studios. But at the same time, we are just as committed to making these quality experiences as we are to experimentation and to coming up with fresh ideas.

I am very interested in creating a diverse slate of titles. Actually, the shape or form that they come in are less interesting to me than the fact that they are differentiated, diverse and distinctive.

Last week, Sony’s Jim Ryan revealed that the PS5 will have more exclusives than any previous PlayStation platform. In terms of blockbuster titles, there’s quite a few in the pipeline, including Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Horizon: Forbidden West, and God of War Ragnarok.
