Blizzard Confirms Overwatch 2 Will Completely Replace The Original Game At Launch

Overwatch 2 is set to completely replace the original version of the hero shooter at launch, Blizzard Entertainment has announced.

While this might seem obvious to some people, it was originally confirmed back in August 2021 that Overwatch and Overwatch 2 would co-exist, with players able to play side-by-side when taking part in the same game modes. The game’s director, Jeff Kaplan, described it as a “shared multiplayer environment where no one gets left behind.”

That’s no longer the case, however. Speaking in a Reddit AMA, Overwatch 2 head honcho Aaron Keller revealed that the original game will no longer factor into its places when Overwatch 2 arrives on the scene. “When OW2 launches on Oct 4th it will be a replacement for the current Live Service,” he said.

Overwatch 2 features 5v5 instead of the original game’s 6v6 model, so presumably this is the the reason why the original game was given the boot.

Earlier this week, Blizzard explained what will happen to any unopened loot boxes from the original Overwatch.

Overwatch 2 is slated to launch on October 4, 2022 via Early Access on PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
