Final Fantasy XVI Director ‘Blown Away’ By The Speed Of PS5’s SSD

Speaking on the PlayStation Blog, Hiroshi Takai, the director on Final Fantasy XVI, has heaped praise on PS5’s ample horsepower, in particularly highlighting the speed of the console’s SSD.

The development team has previously mentioned how the PS5’s power was vital for realising the potential of Final Fantasy XVI, and Takai made it clear that it wouldn’t be possible without Sony’s latest home console.

The two main things that struck me were the size of the memory and the speed of the SSD. I’ve worked with a lot of different hardware over the years, and many have failed to strike the right balance between the capabilities of the hardware and the size of the memory.

However, the PS5 is different — it comes with enough memory installed to take full advantage of the hardware. As for the SSD, as we were building the game, I was simply blown away by how fast it was.

Final Fantasy XVI is scheduled for release on June 22, 2023 for PS5. The game will feature two performance modes for Sony’s console, which prioritise resolution and frame rate depending on your preference.

Last week, Takai alongside producer Naoki Yoshida revealed that players can expect to put in about 70-80 hours into Final Fantasy XVI to reach 100% completion.
