The Last Of Us HBO Exec Talks Joel’s Fate In Season 2, Saying He Doesn’t ‘Feel Constrained By The Source Material’

Craig Mazin, the executive producer and co-writer for HBO’s The Last of Us series, has touched base on the fate of Joel for Season 2, making it clear while nothing has been set in stone yet he doesn’t ‘feel constrained by the source material.’

There’s major spoilers for The Last of Us Part 2 below, so don’t read on if you haven’t played the game yet.

Those of you who have played The Last of Us Part 2 will know that Joel dies early on in the game at the hands of Abby Anderson, who kills him in revenge for Joel murdering her father at the end of the first game.

With The Last of Us HBO’s first season largely sticking to the source material, it is assumed that Season 2 will follow the same path, therefore Joel is probably going to die. However, while Mazin hasn’t said anything about his fate yet, his comments suggest it’s possible there might be changes in store

This should be fairly obvious to anyone by now, but I don’t fear killing characters. But the important thing to note is that neither Neil nor I feel constrained by the source material.
